What is a DOT Inspection?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires annual inspections for commercial vehicles with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs. and those used for interstate commerce. These inspections verify that vehicles meet safety regulations, including the condition of brakes, tires, lights, and cargo securement.

1. Avoid Fines: If you get pulled over in a commercial vehicle without a valid DOT inspection, you could be fined. Violations can cost anywhere from $300 to $15,000+ per incident.

3. Liability: If your commercial vehicle does not have a DOT inspection and is involved in an accident, you can be found liable for causing that accident even if it’s not your fault. Why? Because technically, that vehicle was not supposed to be on the road without a DOT inspection.

The DOT Process: What to Expect

1. A thorough check of: brakes, tires, lights & signals, cargo securement, fluid leaks, steering/suspension, and emergency equipment.

2. Use of the North American Standard (NAS) Inspection Checklist and notes of critical vs. non-critical violations.
